What's the Cost of Hiring a Midwife in New Orleans, LA?

The cost of a midwife in New Orleans, LA, can vary depending on factors such as the specific midwife or practice, the type of care provided, and whether it is a home birth, birthing center birth, or hospital support. On average, midwife services in the area can range from $3,000 to $6,000 for prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum care. Some insurance plans may cover part or all of the cost, so it is important to check with your provider. Additional fees may apply for specific services, so it is recommended to consult directly with midwifery practices in New Orleans to get an accurate estimate.

The cost of a midwife in New Orleans, LA can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Midwife

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work in hospital settings may have different pricing than Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) who attend home births or birth center deliveries.

  • Birth Setting

Hospital births with a midwife typically cost less out-of-pocket when covered by insurance, while home births and birth center deliveries may have different fee structures.

  • Scope of Services

Many midwives offer comprehensive packages that include prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, which can affect the overall cost.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a midwife in New Orleans, LA, depends on your specific insurance plan, the type of care provided, and whether the midwife is in-network. Many insurance plans cover midwifery services, especially if the midwife is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) and the care is provided in a hospital or birthing center. However, coverage for home births or services from other types of midwives, such as certified professional midwives (CPMs), may be more limited or excluded. It's important to contact your insurance provider to confirm the details of your coverage, including co-pays, deductibles, and pre-authorization requirements, if applicable.

  • Experience and Specialization

Midwives with extensive experience, additional certifications, or specializations such as VBAC support or water birth may charge higher rates.

  • Geographic Location

Midwifery costs can vary based on the cost of living and demand for midwifery services in your specific area.

When considering hiring a midwife in New Orleans, LA, it's advisable to research and interview several midwives to find one who aligns with your birth plan, preferences, and budget. During consultations, you can discuss their specific services, insurance acceptance, and pricing structure to ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included and the associated costs.

Destiny Guthrie

Hello! I’m Destiny, a Christian birth doula, wife, and mom to two boys. My approach centers on education, advocacy, and emotional presence while honoring your values and trusting God’s design for birth. I have given birth twice, breastfed one of my children, and have supported five families through pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. I am trained as a birth and postpartum doula through ICEA via Mary’s Hands Network, have completed childbirth education through Mamastefit, and hold CPR and BLS certifications. I am also currently enrolled in the VBAC & Cesarean for Birth Professionals program and Breech 101 with Breech Without Borders to continue deepening my knowledge and support for families. When I’m not supporting families, you’ll usually find me homeschooling my boys, planning our next Disney World trip, thrifting, or curled up with my Kindle. I’m a great fit for families seeking faith led support, confident decision making, and a calm, compassionate presence from pregnancy through postpartum.

Destiny was an amazing support during my pregnancy. She met with us before hand and helped us create a birth plan. She talked us through what each stage of labor could look like- knowing my body would rest during transition and drawing on that knowledge in labor made everything more bearable. It was way more in depth and personal than the hospital classes we took. I was able to have the spontaneous, unmedicated birth that I was unable to have with my first. I think Destiny made all the difference, talking me through my worries and fears from my first birth, and helping me trust that my body was made for this.

Hello, Grace Jackson here I am the owner of Grace Midwifery Birth Center and a Certified Professional Midwife, licensed in the state of Louisiana . I am committed to offering pregnant women more individualized, intimate care. I believe that a mother should be in control of her birth experience as an active and informed decision maker every step of the way. From the very first appointment, to the moment she holds her baby in her arms, she is in control. Childbirth, when viewed from an empowered and connected frame of mind, has the potential to be a beautiful, transformative, life changing event. I fully believe that birthing is a normal physiological process in a woman’s life and when supported by a healthy lifestyle, little intervention is ever needed. I see myself as more of a birth guardian who walks alongside a mother, making sure she has the utmost reassurance and guidance. Birth is natural and beautiful; it can be a completely different experience when not approached from a fear based mindset. Instead, we choose to approach pregnancy and birth with positive, evidence based information as a biologically normal experience. After a 4 year comprehensive apprenticeship, I earned my Certified Professional Midwives (CPM) license. This credentialing is the national gold standard for midwifery certification. It is only available after demonstrating the experience and skills necessary to attend an out-of-hospital birth. The candidate that passes an extensive exam administered by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM), is required to maintain current certification in adult, infant and neonatal CPR and resuscitation. I am also licensed by the state of Louisiana and recognized by the Board of Medical Examiners as a licensed caregiver. As a midwife, it is my duty to stay up to date with evidence based information as well as ongoing education. To date, I have attended over 270 births.

Hi Everyone, my name is Amara Ali and I am a Full Spectrum Birth Keeper located in New Orleans. I am an avid reader and GirlMom to the most amazingly adorable toddler. As an African-centered full spectrum birth keeper, my journey into birth work began in 2019, with a Black Owned doula training before the pandemic changed the landscape of birthing experiences. I quickly became a passionate birth nerd who is all about birth autonomy, birth justice and advocacy! More recently in 2022 I attended a DONA Certified Workshop, where I re-honed my skills and gained valuable knowledge about supporting women and families throughout the childbirth continuum. I will continue to re-certify every few years to stay updated on the latest research, techniques, and best practices in the field of birth support. I have had the privilege of attending births in various settings, including homes, hospitals, and even virtually, adapting to the changing needs and circumstances of my clients. In addition to supporting women during labor and delivery, I have also worked with families facing fertility challenges, offering compassionate guidance, emotional support, and holistic care throughout their journey to parenthood. During the postpartum period, I provide nurturing support to women and their families as they navigate the joys and challenges of early parenthood. Whether it's assisting with breastfeeding, offering practical assistance with household tasks, or simply providing a listening ear, I am dedicated to helping families thrive during this transformative time. My approach to birth work is rooted in African traditions and cultural practices, honoring the wisdom of our ancestors and embracing the holistic nature of birth and motherhood. By offering personalized, culturally sensitive support, I strive to empower women and families to have positive, empowering birth experiences and transitions into parenthood.
