My passion for birth work began long before I knew what a doula was. I’ve always been drawn to mothers and deeply curious about pregnancy, how it transforms the body, mind, and spirit. In college, a course called Pregnancy and Power opened my eyes to the realities of the U.S. maternal healthcare system and the consequences of highly medicalized childbirth. My name is Sandra Luz Alvarado and I am a postpartum doula and a Newborn Care Specialist. I was born in El Salvador and came to California 35 years ago. I am a wife (I have been with my husband almost 30 years!) and a mother to 5 beautiful children, including my youngest, who is three years old. Before becoming a doula, I worked as a graphic designer, elder care provider, and nanny. Some years back I decided to become a postpartum doula.
